Stone age art and How writing has changed over time.

05.06.18
How has writing changed over time?

Hieroglyphics is an Eygiptian system which was used for communication between themselves. They would create pictures to represent a letter and draw/paint them in a vertical way. Now, these days we use letters as a way of communicating by writing letters horizontally across the page or we use a devices to communicate. This is they we (humankind) communicate with each other without having to draw pictures and write them the way the Egyptians would.
Down below I have written my name using the hieroglyphics form and also written the English translations.

Stone age

So lately my class (10Hy) and I have recently been researching things about stone age and the Neolithic/Paleolithic people. As I have researched things I have noticed how much more the human race has advanced in technology and everyday items.  I learnt about how the created their weapons and how gone from using stones that have been sharpened to guns and knives that are made professionally and stuff like that has really caught my attention. The drawing I have drawn below tells a story of how they would party and also fight sometimes at night. We had to create these pictures using sticks and paint to try to get a taste of how they would create these drawings and the tools they would use.

Turning Copper Coins into Gold

28.05.18

Aim: To turn copper into gold.

Equipment:

  • Copper coin/copper strip
  • Bunsen burner
  • Tripod
  • Heat Mat
  • Gauze mat
  • Beaker
  • Tongs
  • Zinc metal
  • 'Zinc Nitrate

Method:
1. Wash copper coin thoroughly
2. Add fresh strips of zinc metal to the solution. Heat to boiling over a bunsen burner.
3. Drop washed copper coin into the solution. Make sure it is touching some of the Zinc metal or the reaction won't work.
4. Leave coin in the solution for 5-10 minutes (check back to observe changes).
5. Remove coin with the tongs, and hold under running water to wash.
6. Use the tongs to hold the washed coin in the Bunsen flame. Observe things.

Observations:
As we watched the solution boil, it began to boil over.

The Power of One

28.05.18

In English, we were asked to individually write a SEXXY paragraph about a particular shot that was taken from The Power of One.  Down below I have written my paragraph.

Image

Statement
Example
Explanation of Director’s Purpose
Explanation of Effect on the Audience
Your Link
(S) The film aspect in one of the scenes the director uses a close up of Sergeant Borman with his baton against Geel Piet’s (a prisoner) neck holding him against the wall.

(E) The director has used a close up to show the audience how Sergeant Borman is standing aggressively with Geel Piet against the wall, with Sergeant Borman glaring at Geel Piet, while Geel Piet avoids eye contact.
(X) The director's purpose of using the close up is to help express the mood and outline that there is a problem going on. Which is Sergeant Borman holding Geel Piet who is very vulnerable, against the wall.
(X) Because the director used close-up, it has made the audience feel mad and helpless. This scene is causing us to feel what Geel Piet is feeling and and it’s made us nervous and scared for Geel Piet.
(Y) This aspect can be compared to when the director used a long shot in the scene where Sergeant Borman stands across from Geel Piet with his Baton. In that scene, we felt scared and angry like we do in this scene.

Evidence - Otzi The Iceman

25.05.28

Otzi The Iceman

In Summary
In Social Studies we have recently been researching and creating a presentation about a man named Otzi. Otzi was found with his body perfected preserved and still intact because of the cold temperature. This man was discovered by researchers and studied by scientists. We have been learning about Otzi for almost two weeks now and we were given questions to find out. After we finished gathering information we then got into groups and started to build a presentation. My class and I were told to pick a theory based on how he died and provide evidence that can back up our theory. In our research, we found that Otzi was shot with an arrow.  We decided to look more into that and explain how we think he was killed e.g if we thought he was killed without getting a chance to fight back we would have to provide strong evidence to prove so.

Why is Evidence important?
Without having evidence to back up our theory we aren't able to prove or make people believe what we believe, and that's because there is nothing that can persuade them into thinking what we think so to them we could just be telling "lies" or "made up" stories.

Making Hokey pokey

24.05.18

Hokey Pokey

Method
1. Put all ingredients except baking soda in a saucepan over low heat.
2. Raise heat slightly so it bubbles, stirs until sugar dissolves.
3. Take off heat.
4. Add baking soda and stir it. Observe
When we added the baking soda the mixture began to harden.
5. Pour carefully into tinfoil
6. allow cooling.

Equipment

  • Saucepan
  • Spoon
  • 50g of sugar
  • 1/2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 TBSP golden syrup.

We formed Carbon dioxide by heating a base which was baking soda which is Sodium bicarbonate and as the hokey pokey began to boil it released/produced carbon dioxide.
We also added one piece of chocolate to the mixture, and the hokey pokey worked out fine.

SEXXY Paragraphs

24..05.18

This week my teacher had asked us to get in a group with other individuals and create a S.E.X.X.Y. paragraph about one of the camera scenes from The Power of One.

(S)- The film aspect in this scene has shown a long shot of Sergeant Borman standing directly across
from Geel Piet, who was an African Prisoner.

(E)- In this scene, they used a long shot to show the audience a fair idea of what's going to happen next
as Sergeant Borman stands assertively with his Baton in his left hand facing Geel Piet's direction.

(X)- The director's purpose of using the long shot is to help express the mood and outline the main
problem of the scene, which is Sergeant Borman targeting Geel Piet.

(X)-This made the audience want to get involved in the situation and stand up for Geel Piet. I causes us to be afraid for Geel Piet and feel what he's feeling.

(Y)- This aspect can be compared to when to when the director used a two-shot in the scene when P.K was fighting with an Afrikaner fighter because he may be afraid of what might happen afterwards.

Stone age

18.05.18

Stone age poster:

So this week we have been learning about the Paleolithic and Neolithic people. My class and I were asked to create a post choosing one of those words and researching information about them. As I was creating my poster, I visited heaps of websites making sure my information was accurate. I discovered the way their weapons were made or what they were made out of (e.g They would use rocks and sharpen the tips of the rock to create a weapon.)  I have also learnt that the people of the Paleolithic stone age gathered their food and were only able to take so much. I really liked making the poster because I've discovered things that I didn't even know had happened.

Science Making Indicators

15.05.18

Aim: To make acid-base indicators using everyday substances.

Equipment: Red cabbage, tea, beetroot, turmeric, cranberry juice, a beaker, water, tripod, Bunsen burner, gauze mat, 1.0 mol L-1 NaOH.

Method:

Task one
For the Tea: Put 100 ml of water into a beaker and boil.
Turn off the Bunsen burner and put three tea bags in the beaker.
Remove tea bags when the tea bags when the tea is very strong.
Place in a small beaker and leave to one side.

For the Cranberry juice: Pour into a beaker and leave to one side.

For the Turmeric: Mix 1 teaspoon turmeric in 100 ml cup of alcohol.
Place in a small beaker and leave to one side.

For the Cabbage: Chop the cabbage into small pieces until you have enough to fill 2 cups.
Place the cabbage in a large beaker and add water to cover the cabbage.
Boil over a Bunsen burner for at least ten minutes for the colour to leach out of the cabbage.
Filter out the plant material to obtain a red-purple-bluish coloured liquid. This liquid is at about pH 7.(The exact colour you get depends on the pH of the water.)
Place in a small beaker and leave to one side.
Repeat this method for the beetroot.

Task two:
1. You now have five beakers, each containing a different indicator.
2. Using a pipette, place 5 ml of the cabbage indicator into two test tubes.
3. Add 5 ml of HCI (acid) to one test tube and 5 ml of NaOH (Alkali) to the other test tube.
4. Record the colour change in the table below.
5.  Clean the test tubes and repeat for the beetroot, tea, cranberry, and turmeric indicators.

Interviews

Interviews.
Are you addicted to your phone?
*We apologize for the terrible videos or bad quality and we were only able to upload one video due to technical difficulties but please click the links below!*

RESEARCH:
(S)Research shows that young people are often to their devices and other technology. As a group, we interviewed young people to see whether or not people are addicted their devices.
(E)During the videos, each individual talks about how much time they spend on their devices and answered a whole bunch of questions. We wanted to get different perspectives from different genders and ages. (E) Out of the 5 videos only one of the students admitted to being addicted and was very honest about how often they spend time on their device and how it affected the way they communicated with other individuals such as their family or friends. This individual, in particular, was the youngest between the four. (L) So we came to a small conclusion that maybe the younger you are the small your attention is drawn to small or big devices such as phones, computers, or consoles. Another interesting thing we learnt is that some kids were given their first device at a very young age, we want to know what you think about it and what you think the right age to give a child a device is.

In some of these videos, we have chosen not to film the people, because of some of the student's would not like to be filmed. You are still able to listen to the questions and answers.

Tech and Change

30.04.18

Technology Define:
Technology is the creative process that utilises tools, resources and systems to solve problems. It also enhances control over natural and man-made environments to improve our lives.

Google slide
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/153JoRDrR4l0SpH7BeeCfWXSepoY_Jl5PEmFr3mXQV1A/edit#slide=id.g390377ad79_0_24

(S) Recently my buddy and I had to compare ways that technology has changed the way we do things now in the modern society. (E) We researched the ways machines and technology have changed things we do because we need some ideas to help us created out the presentation. (E) Below we have shown how we went from reading the newsletter and discovering things around the world, or in our country, to watching the news and listening to people report events. (L) The outcome I had for working on this presentation was really good because it has made me look at the way we have advanced more in this society and the way a piece of technology can make a difference.

For Example:

We use to read the news on pieces of paper.

Now we watch the news on T.V.

This is just one of the many ways that technology has changed the way we do things.

04.05.18

So today we had to write paragraphs based on the following questions down below. Most of what I wrote about was either from experience or stuff that I have seen. I think what I have written a lot of people will be able to understand and relate too, teachers/students in particular.

Are students addicted to their cellphones?

(S) During school time there is a majority of students who tend to use their cellphones in class but does that mean all student that do, are addicted to it? (E) I think it's not necessarily the cell phone itself because it's more the apps downloaded onto the device that draws the student's attention to their phones instead of focusing during class. (E) When a student is addicted to their device there are signs that show they are (e.g they hesitate to hand over or put away the device, they are constantly on their phones during class, they become defiant against teachers demand. (L) Could this become a problem or is it a problem now?

If so, is that problem?
(S) If students are continuously getting told to put their phones away in class, then yes this is a
problem. How? (E) Students need to focus on their work because if they miss a crucial piece
of information they could possibly fail their final exams, or miss the marks they need to pass their
NCEA levels. (E) If I did not focus in class and gave more of my attention to my device, then I am very sure  I would fail all most of my exams and assessments. (L) So yes I do believe this is a problem and something needs to change.
